Nasheed elected as President of MDP

Former President Mohamed Nasheed, who until now held the post of interim president of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has been elected as the president of MDP, in an opponent-free internal election held by the party yesterday.

Members were elected to four vacant posts, each of which had only one candidate, during the election yesterday.

This includes the election of former Baarah MP Mohamed Shifaz as Vice President, former Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed as Chairperson, and Ali Niyaz as Deputy Chairperson of MDP.

MDP said that Nasheed was elected with 33,709 votes, or 58.93 percent; while Ali Waheed received 26,033 votes or 45 percent, and Shifaz received 21,052 votes or 36.80 percent.

The total number of people who voted in the election was 81,053.

Initially, in addition to Shifaz, former Feydhoo MP Alhan also put his name forward to contest for the post of Vice President of MDP. The party however ruled that Alhan was not eligible to contest for this post.
