Harbours are being constructed in 48 islands and new projects will begin in another 10 islands before the end of the year, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu told the parliament during a question session today.
“We hope to solve the problem in all islands with docking difficulties within a year’s time,” said Dr Muizzu.
He also said that projects are often delayed due to shortage of materials, all which have to be imported to the Maldives.
“The Ministry has persistently tried to complete the harbours [within the required timeframe]. Construction of a harbour usually takes about 12 months, but sometimes longer. This is often not the fault of the Ministry,” said Dr Muizzu, after explaining the current status of the harbour construction projects on-going in the atolls.
Speaking in parliament today, the Housing Minister expressed frustration over being summoned for questioning, and said that every Member of Parliament is welcome to contact him to clarify details on government projects.
