Detention extended for African smuggler caught with 3 kgs of drugs

Criminal Court has for the seventh time extended the detention of an African woman allegedly arrested for smuggling over 3 kgs of drugs into the Maldives on 15 May this year.

A judge remanded her in police custody for an extra seven days when she was produced to court for a detention hearing on Sunday, the police said today.

A Thai woman was also arrested along with the African on the same allegations on 15 May. She has remained in police custody since the arrest and her current detention period is set to expire on Wednesday.

The women were apprehended inside a guesthouse in Male’, where the police discovered the drugs. The case is being investigated by the Police Drug Enforcement Department.
