Help Gaza Telethon concludes, record MVR 20 million raised

The Help Gaza Telethon organized by Maldivian media organizations to raise funds for the people of Gaza has concluded early morning on Sunday with a record amount raised in a local telethon thus far.

The telethon, which ran from 2:30 p.m. on Friday until 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, amassed a total of MVR 20,703,486.32.

The fund-raising effort saw tremendous nation-wide support and was described by some local personalities as an example of Maldivian humanity. The Help Gaza Telethon steering committee members have also declared the event a success and a grand achievement.

Mohamed Asif, well known media personality and Help Gaza Telethon steering committee member described the telethon as a “historical achievement.”

Ahmed Zahir, Media Coordinator for Help Gaza Telethon said the people of Maldives have shown “extraordinary” support for the fund raising effort, and thanked them for coming together for the cause.

“I would like to assure that all the money collected through this telethon, and the money we might collect in the future, will be delivered to the people of Gaza,” said Zahir.

The telethon kicked off with MVR 6 million previously collected through the Gaza Fund Maldives effort launched on 17 July by the religiously conservative Adhaalath Party.

The Help Gaza Telethon steering committee said that more donation boxes are arriving from the atolls and that the total amount collected through the effort is predicted to exceed MVR 20 million.
