Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the Economic Council has advised to revise the agreement with India’s Tata Group regarding the construction of flats in Male’, and that he hopes that the revised agreement can be signed next week.
The project to construct flats at the former location of Naadhee building was awarded to Tata by the government of former President Mohamed Nasheed. The subsequent government of former President Dr Mohamed Waheed, however, decided to construct a new building for the Supreme Court at this location, and to move the flats in Hulhumale’.
Following Tata’s disapproval of this decision, the present government decided to construct the Supreme Court building at another location, and to proceed with the flat construction project as agreed with Tata.
Dr Muizzu said that in addition to the revisions, the Economic Council has also added a clause to the agreement with Tata, to construct 150 additional flats in Hulhumale’.
He said that an agreement has been reached with Tata in relation to this matter, and that work will resume within 45 days of signing the revised agreement for projects that have been halted, including the construction of flats at Gaakoshi and at the former location of Arabiyya School.
He added that the completion deadline for the flats at Gaakoshi is 10 months, while that for the flats at the former location of Arabiyya School is one year, from the date of the signing of the agreement.
