Saaid appointed as Maldives

Hassan Saaid has been appointed as the flag bearer for the Maldives contingent at the opening ceremony of the 20th Commonwealth Games.

Saaid is a member of the athletics team representing the Maldives at the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 3 August 2014.

The flag was presented to Saaid at a ceremony at the Ministry of Youth and Sports this afternoon, by Minister of Youth and Sport Mohamed Maleeh Jamal. The ceremony was also attended by Secretary General of the Olympic Committee Ahmed Marzoog.

Speaking to reporters after the presentation of the flag, Maleeh wished success at the Games for the Maldivian athletes, and assured that the government would support all efforts to ensure success for the Maldives at international sports events.

Marzoog, speaking on behalf of the Olympic Committee, said that this year, with 44 participants, the Maldives will send the largest contingent to the Commonwealth Games in the country’s history.

He informed that the first team will depart tonight, and the remaining group will depart on 18 July.

At the ceremony, the Olympic Committee invited the Sports Minister to attend the Commonwealth Games, and also presented him with the ‘Team Maldives’ jersey which will be used by the Maldivian athletes at the event.
