Maldivian Democratic Party (MPD) Parliamentary Group Vice President Ali Waheed has said that some Judges of Supreme Court were involved in changing the government on 7 February 2012.
Speaking at the MDP rally held at Usfasgandu last night, Ali Waheed said that the change of government is an issue on which people are divided in their opinions, and the case should therefore not be investigated by Supreme Court, but be concluded by holding an election.
“We suspect that some of the seven Judges of Supreme Court were involved in this coup. So any decision made by these seven people will not be accepted by MDP; the decision should be made through an election by the 300,000 people of Maldives,” Ali Waheed said.
Ali Waheed did not go into detail of his suspicions surrounding the Supreme Court Judges. He also said that members of former President Gayoom’s administration were behind the coup, and that the Police and Military should be punished for their actions. He also criticised the Police Integrity Commission, noting that they were silent throughout the development of events.
“Even if it’s a person in uniform that’s throwing stones at Shaheed Hussain Adam Building, he’d still be throwing stones, and that is still a crime! So I am asking Police Integrity Commission to wake up instead of sleeping like a reef fish, and fulfill your responsibilities. Otherwise we might have to start chasing you, like we chase the traitors.”
Referring to the interruption of Committee meetings due to ongoing by-elections for two Parliament seats, Ali Waheed said that the ‘coup’ will be investigated as soon as the meetings of Committees where MDP holds majority recommence.
“We won’t do anything other than investigate the coup and punish those responsible for it. If you don’t like us, you can take a vote of no-confidence against us. But the names cannot be called at the Committees, so there is no chance of taking a vote of no-confidence. We know how to do things around the existing laws. We are waiting for you to come to your senses,” Ali Waheed said.
