Government has the authority to reclaim lands leased to Council: MP Nasheed

Kulhudhuffushi Dhekunu MP Mohamed Nasheed has said that the government has the authority to reclaim any piece of land leased to a Council, if the land is being used for activities outside the law.

In an interview with Sun Media Group, Nasheed said that according to regulations pertaining to land, no Council can be granted ownership of land. Pieces of land are leased to Councils to monitor them.

“All land is owned by the state. Policies regarding land are determined by the President. These policies are enforced by Ministers,” Nasheed said.

Nasheed further said that certain agreements were made in leasing land to City Council – the purpose and activities to be carried out were specified; no group has the right to act against such agreements.

He said that illegal practices cannot be stopped unless steps are taken against them, and if the legal branch is efficient, issues like this can be resolved.
