MIRA collects MVR 1 billion in overdue taxes

Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has collected MVR 1 billion in enforced collections since its establishment as the principal tax collector of the State on 2 August 2010, MIRA said in a statement on Sunday.

MIRA said that overdue sums amounting to MVR 1 billion were collected by taking action against defaulters through policies enacted by the authority since August 2010.

“Actions taken by MIRA against those who do not pay the necessary taxes to the State include suspending government services through the relevant offices, freezing bank accounts and taking legal action. MIRA will continue to take action against those who do not pay the necessary taxes to the State, and the authority will endure in executing its responsibilities in a fair and impartial manner,” read the statement by MIRA.

The authority has on occasion frozen bank accounts and assets of companies and has often sought legal action for violating tax laws and regulations during the past three years.
