Fenfushi hit by constant tidal waves

The eastern side of Alif Dhaalu Fenfushi has been experiencing a constant batter by tidal waves for the past three days, the island’s council has said.

Fenfushi island is situated approximately 110 kilometers from the capital Male’ on the southern rim of Alif Dhaalu Atoll, located on the western wall of the country.

Vice President of Fenfushi Council Ahmed Saeed told Sun Online today that the island has been experiencing tidal waves up to 100 feet into land from the eastern side between 12:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. for the past three days.

“Council secretariat and the school are located near the harbour. Tidal waves are bad in this area,” said Saeed.

Flooding in the harbour area is causing the people to find it difficult to move around the area, Saeed said. Fenfushi has a population of 982 inhabitants.

“Flooding has not effected the houses, but the boats moored at the harbour have been heavily damaged,” Saeed said.

A local from Fenfushi speaking on the condition of anonymity told Sun Online that over five years have passed since Gasim Ibrahim, the MP representing Fenfushi, promised a breakwater for the island to prevent the seasonal flooding.
