Ministry of Health and Gender has decided to review the competency of a gynecologist and anaesthesiologist in Fuvahmulah Hospital following accusations of negligence over the death of an unborn child.
In a statement today, Health Ministry said the two doctors have been suspended pending the Ministry’s review and that they will attend an assessment in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male'.
Both doctors reported to work in Fuvahmuah and were active at the hospital today.
The Ministry also condemned Fuvahmulah Atoll Council's questioning of the doctors over alleged incident of negligence. The authority to investigate and take action against medical professional in Maldives falls on the Ministry of Health and Gender and Maldives Medical Council, the Ministry said.
Fuvahmulah Hospital was accused of negligence following the death of an unborn child where a sudden drop in the baby's heartbeat caused it to die unexpectedly. The parents argued that they had been consulting the doctor regularly.
Ministry of Health and Gender defended Fuvahmulah Hospital in another case recently when the hospital’s gynecologist made a C-section incision on a pregnant woman but closed her up without removing the baby.
Dr Hawwa Hana, a gynecologist from IGMH defended her colleague in Fuvahmulah Hospital on Wednesday, and explained that the incision revealed problems that were previously unknown, and the doctor made the right decision by delaying the removal of the baby and calling for additional support to save the lives of the mother and the baby.
The baby was later delivered through C-section with the assistance from another gynecologist and pediatrician from Hithadhoo Regional Hospital in Addu City.
