MP Nihan becomes majority leader

Vilimale’ MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik has been elected as the Leader of the Parliamentary Group of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Following this election, Nihan becomes the majority leader as PPM, with 38 seats, is presently the majority party in the parliament.

Nihan was elected with 21 votes at a meeting of the PPM parliamentary group at the STELCO this afternoon. His opponent Kelaa MP Ali Arif received 14 votes.

Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed was elected as the Deputy Leader of PPM Parliamentary Group with 26 votes, while his opponents Abdulla Rifau and Abdulla Sinaan received 4 votes each.

PPM’s regulation states that its Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader shall be ranked at the same level as the party’s Deputy Leader.

The meeting, chaired by Speaker of Parliament Adbulla Maseeh, was not attended by three members who are abroad at the moment.
