Parliament has approved a five-member select committee to determine composition of standing committees, at the first sitting of the second session of the 18th Parliament today.
The select committee is comprised of Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim, Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed, Kendhikulhudhoo MP Ali Mauroof, Makunudhoo MP Anaara Naeem and Medhu-Henveyru MP Ali Azim. The MPs were approved to the committee with a unanimous vote of 72.
The five-member committee was proposed by Kelaa MP Ali Arif proposed and seconded by Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed.
Article 111 (a) of the Parliament Standing Orders requires parliament to finalize the composition of standing committees within two weeks of the beginning of a new parliament.
Parliament has a total of 13 standing committees, each comprised of 11 MPs. The committees are; General Purpose Committee, Petition Committee, Privileges Committee, Disciplinary Committee, Committee on Secondary Legislation, Public Accounts Committee, Economic Affairs Committee, Social Affairs Committee, 241 Committee (committee on security services), Committee on Independent Institutions, Committee on Oversight of the Government, Committee on National Development and the National Security Committee.
Parliamentary group leaders will propose MPs to the committees. Independent MPs will be proposed by the Speaker of the Parliament.The committees are assembled according to party representation. The party with most seats, ruling party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), will hold majority in each committee of the new parliament.
