Much work to be done prior to implementation of Penal Code: AG

Attorney General (AG) Mohamed Anil has said that there is much work to be done before the implementation of the new Penal Code recently passed by the parliament.

Anil said this while speaking at an event at Traders Hotel to discuss the Penal Code.

“…We have about one year to prepare for the implementation of the Penal Code. One year is very short, given the amount of work that needs to be done,” he said.

Anil said that things to be done include revising the Penal Code and related laws, and elucidated that that the Penal Code needs revision because since it was put together ten years ago, the country has gone through major constitutional changes.

The meeting was attended by Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz, several Supreme Court Judges, Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem, Home Minister Umar Naseer, and officials of United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Maldives Police Service.
