President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that it is not easy for him to ‘watch while young people’s families cry’, and that he does not wish to make life difficult for the youth.
The President made this remark while speaking at a ceremony in Baa Eydhafushi, to inaugurate a land reclamation project in the island.
“It’s not easy for me to watch while a whole youth population cries. It’s not easy to watch young people’s families cry. It’s not my wish to make things difficult for the youth. I wanted to lead the country to be able to facilitate development and opportunities for the youth,” said President Yameen.
He went on to say that a large group of the country’s youth population is ‘trapped’ in a bad situation.
“Young people often follow examples set by some strong politicians – this causes their parents to shed tears. A large group of young people are trapped in this situation today.”
President Yameen called on young people to work with the government, and assured that the current government will not give them bad advice that would result in them ‘losing their way’.
He also urged young people to set aside political differences and work together to build the nation, and to ensure that young people participate in every step towards progress in every island.
