Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the land reclamation project in Baa Eydhafushi, commenced on 19 April, will be completed in about 12 more days.
The agreement for this project was signed on 18 April.
Speaking at a ceremony in Eydhafushi to officially inaugurate the project, Dr Muizzu said that Dutch company Boskalis, which is carrying out the reclamation work, had confirmed that the reclamation of the remaining 24 hectares - excluding an area which poses an environment risk - will be completed in about 12 more days.
He said that efforts will be made to protect Eydhafushi from damage to the environment, which will include identifying erosion areas and placing barriers to protect the island from erosion.
Dr Muizzu informed that about MVR 10 million will be spent on this from the State Budget, and said that the government will cooperate with the people and do everything possible to make the best use of the land and facilitate development in Eydhafushi.
Eydhafushi, which has a population of about 3,000, will have 24 hectares reclaimed under this project carried out by Boskalis. The current size of the island is 32 hectares.
Boskalis completed a land reclamation project in Dhaalu Meedhoo last week.
