The Attorney General’s office has started following the regulation on legal practice licensing in the Maldives which was published on the government gazette on Tuesday.
Following the publication, the Attorney General’s Office has resumed issuing permits to practice law in the Maldives. The office stopped releasing the permits in December last year.
The regulation states the requirements to be met by those who seek license for legal practice in the Maldives. It also states the procedures for applying for legal practice license, and educational and other qualifications of those who could be licensed.
The regulation bars a person from legal practice in the Maldives if the person is convicted rape, treasons, or a crime recognized by Islamic Sharia. It also states that a person convicted of any other criminal offence will be barred from practicing law in the Maldives for 7 years from the conclusion of his sentence.
