Ministry to hand over Male' waste yard project to MTCC

Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure has decided to commission Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to build a waste yard on the south of Male’, Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said.

The Ministry will therefore cancel its contract with Thilafushi Corporation. The company was hired for the waste yard project in March last year, which required the reclamation of a lagoon area opposite Maafannu Stadium in Male'.

Speaking to Sun today, Housing Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu said Thilafushi Corporation has informed the Ministry that it cannot complete the project within the agreed duration. The MVR 24 million project will be handed over to MTCC within a month, Housing Minister said.

He said the Ministry has held discussions with Male’ City Council to remove the anchors leased to dock speedboats in the lagoon area designated for the project. An alternative area will be provided for the boats, he said.

“The waste yard project continues very fast pace. We have spoken with the city council to vacate the area and MTCC has already started design work,” Dr Muizzu said.

Workshops and carpentries in Male’ will be transferred to the reclaimed area. The project will solve the capital's waste management issues and reduce the amount of heavy vehicles that enter the city centre, Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure said.

The project is based on a technical survey conducted with assistance from the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) during Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration.
