Three suspects deny charges in Nizar murder trial

The three suspects charged with terrorism by the State following the murder of Ahmed Nizar of Woodland, Laamu Gan, have denied the charges.

The three suspects are Ahmed Shujau, 22; Ahmed Sabah, 23; and Hussain Sabir, 22.

After they denied the charges, the judge asked the State to present evidence to prove their claims.

The State prosecutor requested to be allowed to present evidence in writing.

Lawyer representing the three defendants said that they can only present a detailed defence after being provided with the documents related to the case.

The indictment states that, around 2:23 a.m. on the 14 of July 2013, a group attacked Ahmed Nizar with wooden planks and iron rods near the Dhiraagu antenna in Laamu Gan. Nizar was promptly taken to Gan Regional Hospital, although he was already dead when he reached the hospital. He was driving a motorcycle north on Sinaee Magu at the time of the attack.

The defendants will present their detailed defence at the next hearing.

The suspects have been charged under Article 2 (a) and (b) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Article 2 (a) states that the act of killing or causing bodily harm or intent to carry out such actions with the intention of inciting fear, or terror, or with a political motive, shall be construed as acts of terrorism.

Article 2 (b) states that the act or the intention of kidnapping or abduction of persons, or of taking hostages, shall be construed as acts of terrorism.

The State has also charged a minor with terrorism in relation to this case.
