Police have established a custodial facility in Fuvahmulah, to house persons who are detained on suspicion of crimes.
The facility, established at Fuvahmulah Police Station, was inaugurated by Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed at a special ceremony held yesterday.
Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Waheed said that while the police have the authority to detain persons suspected of crimes, he hoped that the facility would stay vacant most of the time.
He said that this can only be achieved if all groups work together to prevent crime in the atoll.
Speaking at the ceremony, South Police Division Commander, Chief Inspector of Police Ahmed Shifan said that the facility will play an important role in gaining public trust and confidence, and in achieving progress for the police.
The construction of the facility commenced on 28 November 2012. It consists of ten cells and can hold up to 20 detainees.
