Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that the Centre for Holy Quran is to be renamed Centre for Holy Quran and Sunnah.
Speaking at the award giving ceremony of the Quran Competition held by Centre for Holy Quran at Islamic Centre last night, the minister said that the decision was made by discussion between scholars and work is ongoing for its implementation.
“As the person responsible for implementing such things today, I would like to say that this decision by scholars will be implemented. The reason is that just like Quran, we have to serve Sunnah as well. Muslims have to be educated on Sunnah. We have to teach them that Sunnah is not about one or two things, it relates to our whole lives. We have to teach our students the good practices of the prophet,” Shaheem said.
Shaheem said that the prophet’s practices face challenges today because it gives life to Islam, and if people begin doubting Sunnah, it would be end of Islamic spirit.
Minister Shaheem said that competence in terms of Quran began in Maldives with the establishment of Arabiyya, Mauhadh and the Quran classes which followed these schools. One institution which provides most services in Holy Quran today is the Centre for Holy Quran, where about 2000 students are enrolled.
At last night’s ceremony, awards were given out to students who won the Quran competition. Also, certificates were given out to students who participated in the national Quran competition.
