MP Gaism Ibrahim, leader of Jumhoory Party and Maamigili MP who recently got re-elected to the 18th parliament - has revealed his intention to stand for the position of Speaker of the new parliament.
MP Gasim’s spokesperson Ibrahim Khaleel said today that the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has assured the Jumhoory Party leader that he will receive the party's full backing. The ruling party won 33 of the 85 seats in the 22 March parliamentary vote. Gasim's won party won 15 seats.
“Gasim decided to stand for Speaker with full assurance and support from PPM,” Khaleel said.
He said that Gasim is a capable candidate and noted that Gasim had previously chaired the Special Majlis that drafter the 2008 Constitution.
“Chairing the Majlis that amended the constitution was a job that came with a lot of pressure. Gasim is capable," Khaleel said.
