The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has said that it had taken notice of calls for terrorizing violence against a particular group of people in political gatherings, and has implored for such calls to immediately be brought to an end.
In a Press Release issued yesterday, the HRCM said that everybody has a responsibility to work for social harmony and order, and that calls for violence and cruelty against a particular group was not acceptable.
The Statement noted cruel and violent attacks against Police officers who patrol the streets of Malé, and condemned such attacks that hindered the police from discharging their legal duties. The Statement also called people who committed such violence to be brought to justice.
HRCM also urged political parties to respect the rights of the people in conducting political activities. There are many people in the Maldives who do not belong to any political parties, and their rights must be respected by parties, and protests and other political activities must be conducted with due regard to their rights, said the Statement.
HRCM also condemned undue discrimination among the people because of their partisan affiliations, and that nobody should be threatened, ridiculed, or attacked in any condition.
“Residential places are protected, and the rights of children and old people are to be respected as per the Constitution of the Maldives, and no one is allowed to perpetrate acts of violence and threat against another according to the dictates of the human rights principles, the Constitution and the law, and as such, we request all parties to refrain from committing acts of threatening, cruelty and vandalism against any person for personal or political reasons”, read the Statement.
