Summon of former president to HRCM is a

Maldivian Democratic Marty (MDP) Parliamentary Group Member and Maafannu Uthuru MP Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) has said that the summon for former president Mohamed Nasheed to Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) regarding the detention of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed (Judge Abdulla), is a ‘stain’ on the image of Maldives.

Speaking at a function held last night regarding the lease of Usfasgandu to MDP, Inthi said that the summon of Nasheed to HRCM showed how most independent institutions function today.

He criticised HRCM, indicating that they had failed to investigate more serious cases relating to police brutality.

“Summon of the only president of Maldives who advocated human rights and freedom in Maldives to HRCM is a stain on the image of Maldives. People’s confidence in independent institutions has gone down immensely. Maldivian people are now hostile towards HRCM, and the whole world is mocking HRCM for this,” Inthi said.

Inthi said that the president had no choice but to remove Judge Abdulla as he was a threat to national security. The closest thing to what the constitution allowed was to disallow Judge Abdulla’s presence in court. Inthi called Nasheed to arrest Judge Abdulla first thing, if Nasheed ever became president again.

While Inthi’s statements indicate that the detention of Judge Abdulla was a decision made by the president, Nasheed told HRCM that this decision was made by the Defence Ministry and not him.
