Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure has said that the construction of housing units under the government’s new housing project will commence soon, and be completed within two years.
Deputy Minister for Housing and Infrastructure Abdulla Mutthalib said that the construction of the 1,100 housing units under the Social Housing Project will commence over the next two months.
He said that the units will be handed over as they are completed.
This project is financed by Exim Banks of China and India, which have provided soft loans to cover 715 and 385 units respectively.
Mutthalib said that parliament approval needs to be sought for the flats constructed under the loan provided by China, as the designated location for the flats has changed - which could result in delays in the completion of these units.
He said that efforts are also under way to design 70 to 150 flats in Vilimale’, under the same Social Housing Project.
The ministry started issuing application forms for the flats under the new housing project last Tuesday. Forms have already been collected by more than 6,000 people.
