President Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the decision of who receives flats will not be based on information provided on application forms alone, and that applicants’ actual living conditions will be checked before flats are handed over.
The president said this while speaking at an event held to inaugurate the campaign for Mohamed Riyaz, who will run for Henveyru-South seat on Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) ticket at the upcoming Parliamentary Election.
“This time, we won’t follow the old rule of giving flats based on information provided in application forms alone. We want to confirm, and we have requested to confirm, a policy on how this can be monitored. This means that even if it’s decided to give a flat to a certain person, the flat would not be handed over until we confirm that the person’s living condition is poor,” he said.
Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed said while speaking at the ceremony that the government will soon announce a scheme to solve the problem of housing for families living in small, congested spaces.
The government began issuing application forms for flats constructed under its Social Housing Scheme yesterday.
