Government offers 1,000 scholarships

The government has offered 1,000 scholarships for higher education.

This was announced by President Yameen Abdul Gayoom at a ceremony at Dharubaaruge on Thursday night.

He said that 500 of these scholarships are from overseas universities.

“The 1,000 scholarships are made up of scholarships for people who are already studying, people who want to start studying, and people who want to study while working. It also includes scholarships that have been offered by friendly countries,” said President Yameen.

He said that professions that are in shortage in the Maldives, such as medicine and economics, will be prioritised when granting the scholarships.

“This includes scholarships for general medicine, as well as post graduate medicine for specialisation. There are also scholarships for economics, banking, and finance,” he said.

Referring to the efforts to reform the education sector, he said that the revised national curriculum will be implemented next year.

At the May/June Edexcel A-Level Examination, ten Maldivian students were among those who scored highest in the world, while seven Maldivian students were among those who scored highest in Accounting in the world.
