The State has presented evidence in court to support its claims against Ali Shaan, of H. Hicoast, regarding his involvement in the murder of religious scholar Dr Afrasheem Ali.
The State Prosecutor said in court today that they wished to present evidence against Shaan in relation to four claims, which were that Shaan was involved in planning the murder of Dr Afrasheem, that Shaan was among the group that went to Dr Afrasheem’s residence H. Funvilu to carry out the murder, that Shaan attacked Dr Afrasheem with a sharp object, and that Dr Afrasheem died after being attacked by Shaan and Humaam.
Humaam has been convicted of killing Dr Afrasheem and sentenced to death.
To prove that Shaan was involved in planning the murder, the State presented a confession statement given by Humaam to the court during a session held to extend his period of detention, and a confidential piece of evidence.
To support their claim that Shaan was among the group that went to Dr Afrasheem’s residence to carry out the murder, the State presented the same confession statement by Humaam, and two anonymous witnesses.
To prove that Shaan attacked Dr Afrasheem with a sharp object, the State presented the same confession statement by Humaam, two anonymous witnesses, a phone call recording, and the medicolego report from ADK Hospital following Dr Afrasheem’s death.
To prove that Dr Afrasheem died after being attacked by Shaan and Humaam, the State presented the same confession statement by Humaam, and the statement confirming Dr Afrasheem’s death.
At today’s session, Shaan’s lawyer also presented evidence in Shaan’s defence.
Shaan’s lawyer said that evidence had been presented to prove that at the time of the murder, the night of 1 October 2012 between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m., Shaan was at Jalapeno Restaurant.
Shaan’s lawyer requested to keep the evidence confidential, which was agreed to by the Judge.
Concluding the session today, the Judge announced that the next session will be held next week.
The trial against Shaan was held today after it has been postponed repeatedly following requests by the Prosecutor General’s Office.
