Six companies express interest for Felivaru airport project

Six companies, including three foreign companies, have expressed interest for the project to construct an airport in Lhaviyani Felivaru.

Director of Regional Airports Saamee Ageel told Sun Online today that the companies that have expressed interest in carrying out this project include a Kuwaiti company, a UK company and a Sri Lankan company.

No details have been released regarding the three local companies, but it has been confirmed to Sun Online that Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has expressed interest in carrying out this project.

Transport Ministry called for expression of interest for this project on 8 January 2014, and gave until last Thursday to submit bids.

The airport in Felivaru will have an 1800-ft runway that can accommodate jet aircraft.

The group that wins the project will be given the island of Lhaviyani Madivaru, to be developed as a tourist resort.

The ministry said that the airport project will be completed in about two years.
