Salaries for doctors on the government payroll have been increased starting from January 2014, Ministry of Health and Gender has revealed today.
Health Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Geela Ali confirmed salary the increment, but said details will be provided in a statement at a later date.
Geela Ali said the increment depends on the doctor’s qualifications, as well the number of years of national service. Along with the increment, the government has also increased the number of work hours for doctors, but the Permanent Secretary said doctors are not restricted from practicing in private clinics.
On condition of anonymity, a senior official at the government’s primary hospital Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) said there is widespread discontent amongst doctors over the increase work hours, and also because the increase in hours has been linked with an increase in pay.
Sun is aware that the Health Ministry continues to receive a large number of complaints from doctors over work conditions and benefits.
