We cannot accept today

Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has said that the events which took place at the Parliament today cannot be accepted.

The Commission urged people to resort to dialogue to resolve issues, in order remain safe in the current political danger and turmoil. They advised people to keep their actions peaceful and uphold the principles of democracy.

Regarding the unrest created at the Parliament today, they said protests had turned violent, several buildings had been damaged and people had been injured. Security forces trying to control the situation had also sustained injuries.

They noted that security forces kept their actions within the limits of the laws and exercised patience in controlling today’s protests.

“Several protesters as well as military and police personnel have been injured in the confrontations. We condemn these activities, and urge people to exercise the right to freedom of expression responsibly, peacefully and within the limits of the laws,” the Commission said in their statement.

The Commission also advised against the use of offensive language and to refrain from obstructing the media.
