Maafannu-south primary vote consistent, decides MDP

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided against Ibrahim Waheed’s (Aswad) case to annul its parliamentary primary results for Maafannu-south constituency.

Head of news at opposition aligned local television station Raajje TV, Ibrahim Waheed filed the request after losing by a narrow margin of 3 votes to former Minister of Housing Mohamed Aslam, who won the election with 137 votes.

MDP's election council member Ali Niyaz told Sun tonight that the vote did not contain irregularities that would have effect the final result. It was a unanimous decision, he said.

“The matter was brought to the complaints committee. The committee looked into the matter and decided that it did not contain issues that might have effected the election. We have communicated the decision [to the complainant],” Niyaz said.

Waheed filed the case saying members from Galolhu constituency had cast ballots to the Maafannu-south ballot box. He also said the voters lists maintained by election observers showed the number of ballots counted exceeded the ballots cast.
