MDP National Council to convene over primary today

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to convene its national council to decide on a way forward regarding the parliamentary primary, after yesterday’s voting was brought to a halt over irregularities in voters’ registries and minor unrest.

MDP chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik told Sun today that the party will not annul results for islands that held the primary without issues, but said that a way to continue will be decided by the national council. Moosa refuted media reports that they have decided to restage the voting for some areas.

“We have decided to accept the results for places where everything went well. A national council meeting will be held today, to decide on the election,” Moosa Manik said.

MDP parliament primary was brought to a halt yesterday over increasing complaints of discrepancies in voters’ lists. In minor unrest that followed, heated arguments broke out between officials and party members in Dharubaaruge, Male’ and some of the islands set fire to election material.
