The first ever resort in Thaa Atoll has been opened, and the resort management has decided that 60 percent of its staff will be Maldivians.
The resort by Como Hotels in Thaa Maalifushi, located about 20 minutes by boat from the closest airport in Thimarafushi, was officially opened last Tuesday.
The resort has 65 beds – made up of 33 rooms on the island and 32 rooms in the water. Just three days after it was opened, the resort said that 33 percent of its beds are already occupied.
The first tourists to arrive in the resort were welcomed by a colourful ceremony including traditional boduberu.
This is the second resort by Como Hotels in the Maldives, the first being Cocoa Island.
Several islands have been leased for resort development in Thaa Atoll, including Elaa and Kalhufahala Fushi. Several years after they were leased, resorts have not been completed on these islands.
