MDP wins majority in both City Councils again

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has once again won majority seats in Male’ City Council and Addu City Council.

At the Local Council Election held yesterday, MDP won 7 out of 10 seats in Male’ City Council, and all 6 seats in Addu City Council.

MDP however lost three seats it held earlier - Hulhu-Henveyru, Medhu-Henveyru, and Mahchangolhi; but also won two new constituencies, Vilimaafannu and Galolhu-Dhekunu.

Maafannu-Uthuru seat, which was newly added to the City Council, was given to MDP without election, as the only candidate that ran for this seat was former Home Minister MDP’s Mohamed Shihab.

MDP said last night that it will win clear majority in the Local Council Election. Before the results were announced, former President Mohamed Nasheed said at a press conference that MDP will win 700 out of the 900 seats it contested.

The government, however, has said that even though MDP won majority seats in the two City Councils, majority seats in most Atoll Councils and Island Councils will be won by the Progressive Coalition.
