Progressive Coalition will have clear majority in Council Election: PPM

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that the government coalition, or the Progressive Coalition, will have clear majority in the Local Council Election.

Deputy Leader of PPM Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla said this while speaking at a press conference held at PPM Office today.

“The official results will show that we have majority by a big margin. Similarly, we will also win majority in the upcoming Parliamentary Election,” said MP Abdul Raheem.

He referred to former President Mohamed Nasheed’s remarks last night, whereby he said that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won majority in the Local Council, and said that Nasheed’s purpose is to create violence and unrest in the country, and called on the Elections Commission to investigate such activities.

“EC has not even announced the preliminary results of this election yet. We are concerned over Nasheed’s remarks before the announcement of the results. We urge Elections Commission to take steps to ensure that politicians do not carry out such activities,” he said.

Abdul Raheem also said that Nasheed’s remark that MDP will change the government by winning majority in the Parliamentary Election, is baseless.

He accused Nasheed’s government of blocking councils’ authorities and powers stated in the Decentralisation Act over the past three years, and said that this has led to failure by councils to produce results. He said that the low turnout at this year’s Local Council Election is the result of people having lost faith in councils.

Abdul Raheem said that PPM did not win Male’ City Council’s Galolhu Dhekunu and Vilimaafannu seats not because of lack of support for PPM, but because PPM did not make enough campaign efforts. He said that PPM will win these two seats in the Parliamentary Election.
