Must elect PPM candidates to mend social fabric: VP

Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidates must win the upcoming Local Council Election to mend the social fabric and sense of community that has been broken over the past few years.

Speaking at a campaign rally for PPM council candidates in Kaafu Maafushi last night, the Vice President said that Maldivian communities today crave for peace and stability.

“Peace and the opportunity to move forward with their lives with stability is most important for Maldivian today. To bring back good discipline, we need to elect PPM candidates to weave back our social fabric. The effort is underway and the government needs support, both at atoll and island levels,” Dr Jameel said.

Speaking at the rally last night, Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed congratulated the people of Maafushi for the efforts to improve their local economy and noted that Maafushi played an important role in achieving 1.2 million tourist arrivals in Maldives last year.

“Last year Maldives marked the arrival of 1.2 million tourists. This is three to four times our population. This happens rarely in any country. I am highlighting this because this island is important to tourism,” Minister Saeed said.

Vice President said the government will soon start a waste management program and a reclamation project for Maafushi.
