Authority prohibits heavy vehicles in school zones during peak hours

Transport Authority of Maldives has prohibited heavy vehicles from entering school zones in Male’ during peak hours. The announcement comes ahead of the new academic year, set to begin tomorrow (Tuesday).

Transport Authority Chairman Abdul Rasheed Nafiz told Sun today that starting tomorrow, the authority has prohibited heavy vehicles from entering school areas during the start and end of school sessions. Traffic police will be monitoring the school zones, he said.

“Lorries, garbage trucks, construction vehicles and such. Heavy vehicles will not be allowed to enter during school start and end hours,” Nafiz said.

He said the authority will fix the appropriate traffic signs and that those who violate the regulation will be subject to withheld licenses and fines.

The previous regulation, which also prohibited unnecessary vehicles to enter school zones during peak hours, was rarely enforced.
