Biggest challenge for Police is financial limitations: Police Commissioner

Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz has said that the biggest challenge faced by the Police today is financial and budget limitations.

Riyaz told reporters yesterday that every issue currently faced is related to finance. Noting that more officers are needed in the Police institutions, he said that a request has been submitted to the government detailing reasons and asking for permission.

“The biggest challenges now are financial. Everything is connected to finance. The need to employ more people is connected to finance, that is, their salaries and so on. We have submitted a request to the government, describing reasons for the need for more staff and requesting permission.”

He noted that the number of Police in other atolls is limited, resulting in the existing officers having to work extra time. As they do not get enough time to rest, the conditions of these Police Stations are low. He said that they are working on solving problems arising due to this.

“We are identifying areas where serious incidents take place, and trying to station more officers in those areas. We have to change our system such that the officers get enough vacation and rest,” Riyaz said.

Riyaz said that the only difference between citizens and the Police is that the Police have the authority to implement laws – no difference exists beyond that.
