No pending investigations: Inquiry Commission

Commission of National Inquiry (CNI), formed by a resolution by the President, has said they have not been assigned any investigation tasks by the President.

President of the Commission Ismail Shafeeu said at a press conference at Muleeaage today that the purpose of the three-member Commission is to investigate the events on the day of transfer of power. It was not formed for criminal investigations.

Commission member Ibrahim Yasir said that some people believe that the Commission was formed for criminal investigations because former Presidents had created Presidential Commissions for the purpose of conducting criminal investigations.

“As soon as the Commission was formed by a resolution by the President, people began asking about the type of investigations that will be undertaken by us . We have not been assigned to conduct any investigation. What we do are inquiries. Our task is to find out what happened on the day of transfer of power,” Yasir said.

He said that the Commission is independent, and their work is unbiased and just. They will submit their report to the relevant authorities by 31 May.

The resolution under which the Inquiry Commission was formed stipulates the investigation of how events developed from 14 January to 8 February. A report of these findings must be submitted to the President and Prosecutor General (PG) before 31 May.

Yasir expressed confidence in meeting the deadline, and said that cooperation by those who have information of the events of 7 February would make their task easier.

Ismail Shafeeu said that they are collaborating more with UN than Commonwealth in these inquiries because UN consists of almost all of the world’s countries.

The Commission, run in a hall and a room in Muleeaage, will share their findings with the media once every two weeks. A website will be created, where their information will be published.
