Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has said that Male’ City Council’s actions do not protect the rights of all Maldivians, referring to the release of a large area in Male’ to one political party. The party has also blocked nearby roads, hindering traffic.
Thulusdhoo MP and DRP member Rozaina Adam said at a press conference held today at DRP office that the Local Government Authority (LGA) should take steps against Male’ City Council, whose actions are causing disturbance to the public.
“LGA should take the necessary steps against the City Council for saying that they do not recognize the government. They are manipulating their authority to harass citizens. Something should be done against this by LGA,” Rozaina said.
She said that even though Male’ City Council is made up of a large number of MDP members, it is not ‘MDP City Council’ but Male’ City Council. LGA should look into the manipulation of institutions created to provide public services.
“How can the City Council release areas for people to put up tents and live on the streets? People are cooking and living on the street, and using Dharubaaruge as a public toilet. LGA should look into this immediately and take the necessary steps,” Rozaina said.
Rozaina condemned the involvement of children in political events, and urged the Human Rights Commission to protect the rights of children.
“Human Rights Commission should look into the involvement of children in political events where they are sometimes exposed to violence. They are being robbed of their innocence,” Rozaina said.
