PPM holds primaries for 67 councils

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has held primaries for 52 island councils and 15 atoll councils, to elect candidates to compete in the Local Council Election scheduled for 18 January.

Chairman of PPM Election Committee Mohamed Tholal told Sun Online that in addition to the primaries for the 67 councils, the party also earlier held primaries for Feydhoo, and Vilimaafannu.

“Primaries for the Local Council Election are under way since yesterday. They will be concluded tomorrow night. We don’t know yet, the number of PPM candidates that will contest in the election,” he said.

He said that PPM and Jumhooree Party will work as a coalition in the Local Council Elections and that the number of candidates that will contest on the coalition ticket will be revealed later.

Opposition MDP has already held primaries for the Local Council Elections.

The Local Council Elections involves the election of 1,118 councillors in total. This is made up of 975 island councillors, 120 atoll councillors, and 17 city councillors.
