Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has elected five members to compete in the Addu City council race.
Speaking to Sun, president of MDP’s Addu City branch Ahmed Adhuham said that current mayor Abdulla Sodiq won the ticket by default for Hithadhoo-north constituency without contest.
He said the Feydhoo ticket was won by Abdulla Ashavan and Ali Mohamed won Hulhumeedhoo ticket. Current councilors for both constituencies did not compete in the primary.
Maradhoo ticket was on by Abdulla Thoyyib and Hithadhoo-central ticket was won by Hussain Hilmy. Both are current councilors for the areas.
Mohamed Yashif won the Hithadhoo-south ticket after defeating the area’s current councilor Hussain Fahumy.
MDP conducted the party’s local council primary for 13 constituencies including Male’ and Addu cities yesterday. Second phase for the voting will be held on Monday. A total of 185 members are competing for the tickets, where 17,455 members are eligible to vote.
Elections of city, atoll and island councils will be conducted as the local council general election on 18 January 2014.
