Three former ministers of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government have won the party’s primary tickets to compete for Male’ City Council seats.
In the primary election held yesterday, former Defence Minister Ameen Faisal won the ticket for Hulhu-Henveyru constituency, former Home Minister Mohamed Shihab won the ticket for Maafannu-north and former Education Minister Mariyam Shifa won the Galolhu-north ticket.
MDP conducted the party’s local council primary for 13 constituencies including Male’ and Addu cities yesterday. Second phase for the voting will be held on Monday.
The remaining tickets were won by Hassan Manik (Baikendi) who won the Henveyru-central ticket, Fathimath Rizween who won the Galolhu-south ticket, Mohamed Rasheed who won the Machangoalhi-north ticket, Mohamed Farooq who won the Machangoalhi-south ticket, Shamaau Shareef who won the Maafannu-west ticket, Ahmed Rishwan won the Maafannu-south ticket and Hussain Shareef won the Vili-maafannu ticket.
Two members on the current Male’ City Council who competed in the primary, Hassan Afeef (Jambu Afeef) and Mohamed Afrah, faced defeated.
The local council general election where city, atoll and island councils will be elected is scheduled for 18 January 2014.
