Male’ City Councillor Lufshan Shakeeb has left Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Another member of Male’ City Council told Sun Online that Lufshan has informed them of his decision to leave MDP.

He said that Lufshan also said that he will contest the council seat as an independent candidate.

Lufshan said in a tweet yesterday that on the following day, he would make the most difficult decision yet in his political life.

Today, he tweeted that he has left MDP.

Lufshan was not available for a comment at the time of press, and his reason for leaving MDP is not yet known.

MDP on Wednesday called for application of candidates interested in running on the party’s ticket for the upcoming local council elections.

MDP has said the party secretariat will receive application until 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, 28 November.

The party also said a primary will be held on 30 November if applications exceed the number of seats available for a particular constituency.
