Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the hospital in Hulhumale’ will be developed in order to solve the problem of overcrowding at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male’.

Speaking to the press after visiting IGMH today, Dr Jameel said that the problem of overcrowding will be solved to a great extent when the construction of the new wing of the hospital is completed.

“The most important thing we noted was the provision of medical supplies for the smooth-running of the hospital. This can be solved. The problem of overcrowding will be solved to a great extent with when the construction of the new wing is completed with next year’s budget. In addition, efforts will begin in a few months to upgrade the hospital in Hulhumale’,” he said.

He assured that the new government has already commenced efforts to solve the problems in the health sector, and to improve the quality of health services available to the people of the Maldives.

He said that as stated in the manifesto of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the elderly can now obtain services at IGMH without having to queue up.

Dr Jameel said that efforts are also under way to train local doctors and nurses as required by the health sector, and that an announcement will be made tomorrow to employ 58 Maldivian nurses.
