President pardons 35 convicts

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has pardoned 35 convicts who were carrying out sentences for various crimes.

The President’s Office said in a statement that the pardon was issued under the Law on Clemency and Alleviation of Penalties.

The convicts who were pardoned today were carrying out prison sentences, exile sentences, and house arrest sentences.

The President’s Office said that the convicts’ age, health condition, and conduct were considered before the pardons were granted. The pardons were also issued on several conditions.

The President’s Office has not provided details of the conditions or the convicts.

The Office has said, however, that convicts carrying out sentences for murder, terrorism, sexual abuse of minors, rape, and homosexual conduct were not among those who were pardoned today.
