Independent Institutions Committee has passed to submit the no-confidence motion against Prosecutor General (PG) Ahmed Muizzu to the parliament.
The no-confidence motion against Muizzu was filed by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The motion was passed today with four votes in favour by MPs of MDP, namely Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed, Ihavandhoo MP Ahmed Abdulla, Henveyru-South MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor, and Maafannu-North MP Imthiyaz Fahmy.
Hamid Abdul Gafoor has been charged by the State, or the PG Office, for refusal to comply with a request by the police to provide a urine sample.
The MPs who voted against the no-confidence motion are Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed, Nilandhoo MP Abdul Muhsin and Hanimaadhoo MP Mohamed Mujthaz.
At today’s meeting Riyaz Rasheed said that he had not received the written defence statement submitted by Muizzu.
Committee Chairperson Ahmed Sameer said however that the defence statement had been sent to all MPs.
Muizzu said earlier that he was not given enough time to prepare his defence statement for the no-confidence motion against him.
