Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has extended his greetings to the people of the Maldives on the occasion of Victory Day.
In a statement issued by Gayyoom as president of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), he congratulated the military for the historic victory gained for the country on 3 November 1988.
He also sincerely thanked the Indian government and military for their contribution to the Maldives’ victory.
Gayyoom highlighted that it is of utter importance to remember that a group of Maldivian traitors were among the terrorists who organised the attack, which took the lives of several innocent Maldivians.
He called on Maldivians to be wary of similar schemes by those traitors today, and to be prepared to save the country from them.
“The lesson we have to learn is that we have to remain united, in one religion, as one. We should not be divided for any reason.”
Gayyoom said that he is confident that the Maldives can sustain its independence and sovereignty, God willing, if its people continue to follow Islamic guidance, stay united as brothers and sisters, and remain wary of the schemes of Maldivian traitors and others who attempt to interfere in the country’s affairs.
