Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Shahid has said that the remarks made by Fares-Maathoda MP Ibrahim Mutthalib regarding the composition of the structure for the post of Sergeant-at-Arms, are not true.
In a statement issued by the parliament, Shahid said that the post was created by the Parliament General Committee, and that it was done according to the Parliament Regulation.
Shahid expressed sadness over Mutthalib’s remarks regarding such a straightforward matter, which could incite fear and strife in the society.
Shahid also assured the public that the Speaker of Parliament would not carry out any activities that are against the Constitution or the law.
The statement said that an individual was appointed to the post of Sergeant-at-Arms on 30 October with 56 votes in favour out of 57 MPs present at the sitting, and that MPs of Maldivian Democratic Party, Progressive Party and Jumhooree Party were among those who voted in favour of this motion.
